Milestone year for Okanagan man

KELOWNA – The Kelowna Senior Centre was the scene of a big celebration Wednesday to honour its oldest member, as Kelowna resident Julien Laforce turned 100 years old.

“100-years old, who would have ever thought I could be here today,” said her daughter Anita Jewell during a speech she gave. “You have cared for all the right reasons and we love you dearly. How special is it for me to live close by and watch you age with dignity and grace.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

While Laforce may be the oldest of the 1,500 members at the senior centre, his friends say it’s just a number.

“He can play pool as good as a 60-year old if not better,” said his friend Archie Archibald.

Juilen, however, is known for a lot more than just his pool skills. Friends and family says he’s got quite the sense of humour. When asked what his secret to a long life is, Julien laughed and says “that’s a secret.”

The 100th birthday, however, is just one reason why 2015 is a milestone year for Julien. This summer he and his almost 95-year old wife Rita will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary. That makes them one of the longest married couples in all of B.C. When asked what the key to their long and happy marriage is, Rita doesn’t hesitate to say “patience and sacrifice.”

The couple will celebrate their special wedding anniversary July 15.
