EDMONTON — Suspected gang members with ties to Mexican drug cartels, who were arrested in Dec. 2014, were re-arrested March 13 and are facing new drug-related charges.

Twenty-eight year-old Cody Sterling Tremblett and 34-year-old Penny Sue Flemming were out on bail from their previous charges. They were re-arrested by ALERT officers after an investigation into continued drug activity.

Tremblett and Flemming are allegedly La Familia gang members with ties to Mexican drug cartels and a notoriously violent international criminal group, police say.

Four individuals were arrested in December after months of investigation by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team, which believes the group was trying to gain control of drug distribution channels in Alberta.

At the time of last year’s arrest, ALERT seized $600,000 worth of drugs, two assault rifles, and $45,000 in cash proceeds of crime.

Police said then Albertans should be concerned.

“Their connection to Mexican cartels and MS-13 creates a linkage to violence that is incomprehensible to most,” Insp. Darcy Strang warned at the Dec. 17 news conference.

“[La Familia has] tentacles all over the place. They have tentacles in B.C., they have tentacles in Alberta, and even had some…in Saskatchewan. This hurt them a lot. …We interrupted them in a very early stage of their business.”

Tremblett and Flemming were re-arrested March 13 after ALERT investigators witnessed a suspected drug deal in a southeast Edmonton parking lot. After searching a vehicle and home, police say cocaine and “further evidence to suggest drug trafficking” was found.

Tremblett is facing two new charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, three counts of breaching recognizance and one count of possession for the proceeds of crime.
