WINNIPEG – Police say they’ve put a stop to a string of break ins in the River Heights area after the arrest of three boys – including a 13-year-old captured after officers chased a stolen car.
Police say they’ve increased patrols in River Heights after several complaints of property crimes. At about 4 a.m. Monday they saw a group of teens in the Kingsway and Campbell Street area “believed to be breaking into vehicles” , who fled when officers approached.
Two were caught and arrested shortly after, but a third suspect escaped and is believed to have stolen a vehicle in the area to make his getaway.
Two boys, 14, faced several charges including 14 counts of mischief.
Early Tuesday morning officers spotted a stolen vehicle downtown and tried to pull it over at Ellice Ave. at McGee Street. The driver sped off and police gave chase – the suspect vehicle crashed at Sargent Ave. and Victor St.
“The driver fled on foot but was located and arrested a short distance away,” police said in a news release Tuesday. The driver was found to be a 13 year old boy, and police later realized he was the third suspect sought in the River Heights break ins.
He is facing several charges including:
- Theft Under $5000 x 3
- Mischief Under $5000 x 14
- Theft of Motor Vehicle
- Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
- Drive without licence or with invalid licence (HTA)
- Fail to Comply with Disposition x 5
