RADISSON, Sask. – A small Saskatchewan town is mourning the death of an 11-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a train this weekend. Flags outside of Radisson’s town office were at half-mast Sunday.

“He had a life to live, and it’s been snapped away from him. So it’s very, very sad,” said Radisson Mayor Dave Summers.

“Our role is to be there as a support, and to come up with things that we can do as a council, and the whole town can do, to be there for the family.”

Mounties say two youths were struck by the train south of Radisson around noon Saturday. The other boy, 13, was treated for minor injuries.

Marion Fehr-Stead is a town councillor and school bus driver. She says she’s in a state of disbelief.

“He was a little boy who you couldn’t help but love…he was on my bus every day. Morning and afternoon,” she said, wiping away tears.

The victim’s family asked that his name not be released at this time.

“They’re not ready yet to deal with the phone calls,” said Summers. “We want to give them time to be together, and grieve as a family.”

RCMP are investigating the incident.

“I just really want to commend our volunteer firefighters and first responders. They had to go and be there with someone they knew. And I think that’s the hardest job there is,” said Summers.
