When it comes to food at sports events, peanuts and crackerjacks no longer do.
Ahead of their home opener tomorrow at BC Place, the Vancouver Whitecaps unveiled a lineup of a different sort for the 2014-2015 season. Smoked pork belly, vegetarian poutine and garam masala beef won’t score any goals on the field, but the team is hoping it’ll keep fans salivating in the stands.

“It’s to keep that kid of nostalgic stadium feel, but to make it more mainstream,” says Will Tse, BC Place Executive Chef.
“I come from a restaurant and hotel background, so I treat the stadium as one big restaurant. I source a lot locally, I want to bring something that’s healthier, not your typical stadium food, but keeping in line of what, as a child, you would good to a stadium and eat.”

Local celebrity chef Vikram Vij will also have a second concession stand in the stadium.
“The dishes are…handcooked, they are slow-cooked, the spices are ground,” said Vij. “They’re not just Indian food, it is my food, my name on the plate.”
The selection of craft beers has also been expanded and includes offerings from Parallel 49, Central City Brewers and Steamworks.
But despite all that, some things won’t change.
“Hot dogs, french fries, chicken fingers, we still have all that,” says Tse.
