VANCOUVER – DNA evidence from a sex assault has led to charges for a Langley man in connection to an incident in May, 2014.

Police say multiple charges have now been laid against Kevin Adelmo Sharp, 22, of Langley.

Last May, a woman in the 20500-block of 24 Avenue woke up in the middle of the night and opened her sliding glass door to let her cat in. Sharp is alleged to have grabbed her by her neck, forced her into the bedroom and sexually assaulted her. She was able to get away, and Sharp allegedly stole some personal items from her home.

The victim went to hospital and after a sexual assault examination, the Forensic Assessment Centre linked DNA taken from the victim to that taken from Sharp.

Police were aware of two similar occurrences that helped to link Sharp to the May sexual assault.

In October, 2014, a Langley RCMP officer was flagged down by a woman in the 20100-block of 56 Avenue and she told him she had been sexually assaulted. She said she had been picked up by a man, alleged to be Sharp, and taken to a park on 53 Avenue where they would have sex in exchange for money. When they arrived at the park, Sharp said he would pay her later. She insisted he pay now and he sexually assaulted her. He then pushed her our of his car and fled.

The second allegation refers to an incident in Surrey, where Sharp assaulted and robbed a Langley woman on Oct. 7, 2014.

Police say the circumstances are very similar in that he physically assaulted her. She was eventually able to escape and Sharp is alleged to have stolen some items from her purse.

“These charges are a direct result of the advancements in police forensic evidence gathering and analysis along with the ability to work seamlessly across municipal  borders,” said Supt. Murray Power, officer in charge of the Langley Detachment. “Connecting allegations such as these to one person is a constant policing concern and was often difficult to do in years past. We are very pleased with the investigative result and will do all we can to support the victims as we move forward.”

Sharp has now been charged with breaking and entering, two counts of sexual assault with a weapon, theft of a motor vehicle and assault causing bodily harm. He has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on June 8.
