Some Metro Vancouver ski runs re-opening after warm February

Grouse Mountain has re-opened the Paradise Bowl thanks to a spell of cold temperatures and plenty of man-made snow. Global BC

Metro Vancouver skiers and snowboarders finally have a bit of good news. Both Cypress Mountain and Grouse Mountain are re-opening after the warmest February on record in Vancouver.

Grouse Mountain’s Paradise Bowl opened Tuesday thanks to a spell of colder weather and some man-made snow.

“It has taken a little patience and perseverance, but we are thrilled to welcome the return of winter to the Peak of Vancouver,” said Grouse Mountain general manager Michael Cameron in a statement.

UBC climate scientist Simon Donner noted that for the first time in 65 years Grouse Mountain recorded no snow in the month of February.

Cypress Mountain, which had closed due to lack of snow, will open Wednesday after generating more man-made white stuff than they ever have in the month of March.

Officials say they hope this year’s ski season will mirror the winter of 2010, when a sunny February was followed by plenty of late-season powder.
