Watch: A new crime-fighting centre was unveiled today at RCMP headquarters in Surrey. John Daly reports.
The new Real Time Intelligence Centre, also known as RTIC-BC, has been unveiled in Surrey today.
The centre provides real-time support to front-line Lower Mainland police officers dealing with serious crimes such as murder, home invasions, violent robberies or serial sex offences.
Staff at RTIC-BC analyse databases and open source material and provide real-time information and intelligence to front-line police officers within minutes.
The RTIC is staffed by RCMP, BC Corrections, BC Sheriffs, Corrections Services Canada, Canada Border Services Agency, Transit Police, Delta Police, Abbotsford Police, New Westminster Police and Vancouver Police.
The centre has been in the works for several years, and it soft-launched in June 2014.
It is expected to be staffed and operating 24/7 by this summer.
In the first seven months of its existence, staff monitored nearly 42,000 emergency events.
“Even now we are not quite at full strength,” said Insp. Sandro Colasacco. “Once fully staffed, we will have 43 resources: 17 police officers and 26 civilian employees, primarily researchers and analysts.”
