WATCH: Small town politicians help police take down robbery suspect

A local news camera was rolling Saturday as a robbery suspect tried to flee from police in a small Wisconsin town – only to be brought down by a pair of local civic leaders.

Police began the search around 4 a.m. Saturday after finding doors had been forced open in the village of Greendale, Wisconsin.

Seven hours later, a news camera from a local Milwaukee station had just arrived as Greendale police began to deploy K-9 units.

That’s when the suspect made a run for it, darting out of one of the shops – and right into the path of Greendale Village trustee Jim Birmingham.

“He came around the car, and in my feeble attempt, I tried to jump him and he pushed me aside,” Birmingham told TMJ-4 News in Milwaukee.

Birmingham’s attempt to stop the fleeing suspect was  unsuccessful, but moments later the man was confronted by yet another local politician: Village President John Hermes.

Hermes was able to wrap the fleeing man, drag him into a nearby snow bank and pin him until police arrived seconds later.

“He was running right at me, and I just gave him a nice butt into the snow bank and tackled him,” Hermes said. “And then the police were right behind him and grabbed him after that.”

Greendale police were able to bring the man into custody, and are thankful for the help in bringing the chase to an end.

“We were in the right spot at the right time. Or maybe the right spot at the wrong time,” said Hermes.
