WATCH ABOVE: It has been a deadly week on the roads throughout the Capital Region. Lisa Wolansky finds out how first responders are coping.

EDMONTON — Two people were killed and three others were injured following a crash in Leduc early Wednesday morning. Police say it’s difficult to immediately say much more about what happened given how devastating the crash was.

“Upon arrival, it really wasn’t clear what happened,” says Const. Julian Celms of the Leduc RCMP.

Emergency crews were called to Sparrow Drive, just south of Airport Road shortly after 1:30 a.m., where a taxi mini van and small pickup truck collided.

Two 37-year-old men in the taxi died at the scene. Police say they were both from Newfoundland and Labrador, although their names have not been released.

The 38-year-old driver of the taxi was taken to an Edmonton hospital with critical injuries. Another man who was inside the taxi was taken to hospital in stable condition after being ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

Both the pickup truck and the van were in the ditch when emergency crews arrived. The RCMP’s collision reconstruction team instructed tow truck drivers to haul them back onto the street.

WATCH: Michel Boyer reports on a collision in Leduc that claimed the life of two men and injured several other people.

“They’re re-positioning the vehicles right now to understand where the position was upon impact,” says Celms. “So that we get the best picture we can of exactly what happened and what unfolded.”

The RCMP also sent up a drone to get a better perspective of the crash scene. So far, mounties believe the two vehicles collided head-on before coming to rest in the ditch.

They say it is too early to tell if speed, alcohol or road conditions played a role in the collision.

On Monday, three people died and one other person was seriously injured when their vehicle rolled on Highway 2, near Leduc.

The 35-year-old driver of the truck involved in Wednesday’s collision was not injured. The 25-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Sparrow Drive between 65 Avenue and Sparrow Crescent was closed for several hours. It was open again shortly before 10 a.m.
