LETHBRIDGE – Premier Prentice has warned Albertans that cuts will need to be made in the upcoming budget.
Local MLAs Greg Weadick and Bridget Pastoor held a public meeting Thursday night to discuss priorities, possibilities and plans with regards to the province’s fiscal situation.
Some residents who attended the forum are already feeling anxiety about the unknowns.
“It’s frustrating to be here and to listen to this and know that it’s going nowhere,” said Maria Fitzpatrick.
Weadick believes public input on where these cuts should be made is still crucial to the process.
“It’s citizens of Lethbridge sending the message, saying this is what we value,” said Weadick. “This is where we think we may be able to see cuts, here’s where we believe some increases in revenue would be acceptable.”
The meeting also discussed the proposed budget cuts that could target public service employees.
“I’m now a mother and I’m really concerned for my children,” said Little. “I’m concerned for education.”
Weadick said employees in health, education and other essential areas shouldn’t be hurt by the cuts. But the Alberta Teachers’ Association has been quick to raise its concerns.
“We won’t be able to hide the impact that this will have on students and parents,” said ATA president, Mark Ramsankar.
