WATCH: Temporary layoffs at Sicamous business

SICAMOUS – At a traditionally slow time of year, low oil prices are not making things any easier for a Sicamous business that manufactures trailers for the oil and gas and mining industries.

Twin Anchors Marine and TA Structures has had to temporarily layoff staff.

“I think it is 42 personnel we’ve actually laid off in total,” says manufacturing manager Nigel Watson. “[They are] temporary layoffs, of course.”

“We’ve seen a slight slowdown in our building for accommodation units. Whether that is related to the oil price or not that is what we are seeing. Our clients are cutting back on budgets and capital expenditure.”

Until 2006 the company primarily builthouseboats, but since 2011 they’ve been focusing on constructing trailers. Now that seems to be shifting again with three new houseboat orders. The business hopes to eventually bring all its staff back to work.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We’ve had four employees come back this week,” says Watson. “Obviously the houseboats rolled through from the welding shop into the construction bay so as it progresses the electrical department, the plumbing department, the finishing department, they’ll all start seeing staff coming back to work.”

The business still gets requests for quotes for trailers and hopes other factors like a low Canadian dollar will help bring houseboat orders their way.
