Delta family still struggling to recover lost funds from stolen bank cards

WATCH ABOVE: The theft of a wallet has turned into an endless nightmare for a Delta family. Rumina Daya reports.

VANCOUVER – Delta resident Baljit Klair has been fighting for seven months to get his money back.

He says his locked truck was broken into last July while the family was at a reception in Surrey. Baljit’s wallet was in the console and the thieves stole his credit and debit cards. They then put the wallet back and he had no idea the cards were missing until the bank called the next day.

Baljit says more than $16,000 in fraudulent charges and withdrawals disappeared from his account. He reported it to Delta Police immediately and while TD Bank, Vancity and RCB Visa have compensated him, RBC Bank is refusing to credit him for more than $8,000.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Instead, the family claims it’s being blamed for the losses.

“We don’t understand how they got to the pin, we know how they got to the wallet, but if you guys are paying us back for one of the accounts, the Visa account, it doesn’t make sense that you’re not paying us back for the personal and the business account,” says Baljit’s daughter Jessica, speaking on behalf of her family due to a language barrier.

This is all despite the fact that four charges of fraud and unauthorized use of a credit card have been laid against Ranjit Singh Dhaliwal; the 45 year old man has long criminal history.

“In this circumstance our investigator has identified a suspect who doesn’t appear to be linked to the family in any way,” said A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow with the Delta Police.

Global News tried reaching out to RBC to get the bank’s side of the stroy, but in an e-mail, Andrew Block, senior communications manager, said the bank cannot comment right now.

“We just want RBC to give us the money back,” said Jessica.
