EDMONTON – A central Alberta murder trial has heard that police obtained a key piece of DNA evidence using a method similar to what’s often depicted in popular television series.

An investigator testified Thursday in the Brian Malley case that police got the suspect’s DNA by retrieving a napkin from the garbage at a fast-food outlet where he had just eaten.

The trial in Red Deer has heard Malley’s DNA was found on packaging used to disguise a homemade pipe bomb that killed Victoria Shachtay in November 2011.

Malley was Shachtay’s financial adviser and the Crown argues he killed the 23-year-old woman because he had been covering her losses by paying her out of his own pocket.

The defence says the real killer was someone who wanted to send a message to Shachtay or her family.
