REGINA- A local legal expert explains there could be any number of reasons why charges aren’t being laid in the death of a newborn baby boy.
The infant’s remains were discovered in the backyard of a home along the 700 block of Retallack Street, last November.
After a lengthy investigation and consulting with the crown, Regina police announced Tuesday they have closed the case without charges.
The department head of Justice Studies at the University of Regina explained the death could have been from any number of things, such as a terminal disease or sudden infant death syndrome.
Hirsch Greenberg said police may not be releasing details to protect the family’s privacy.
“They are already probably devastated by the death of the child and they didn’t want to make more of it in the media than they actually had to,” he said. “They came to a conclusion based on the evidence or lack of evidence they found.”
Greenberg added both the criminal code and the Child Family Services Act deal with the death or abuse of a child under the age of 16.
