SAG Awards to honour year’s best on-screen performances

TORONTO — Hollywood awards season continues Sunday night with the SAG Awards, honouring the best on-screen performances by members of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

Stars will celebrate themselves at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with 315 bottles of Taittinger champagne (and another 288 at the after-party) and a dinner created by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck.

Presenters at the 21st annual event include Patricia Arquette, Adrien Brody, Bryan Cranston, Eric Dane, Ethan Hawke, Felicity Jones, Michael Keaton, Lenny Kravitz, Matthew McConaughey, Edward Norton, Eddie Redmayne, Julia Roberts, J.K. Simmons and Emma Stone.

Carrie Fisher will present the Lifetime Achievement Award to her mom, Debbie Reynolds.

Regina’s Tatiana Maslany is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her work in the made-in-Toronto series Orphan Black. She’s up against Claire Danes (Homeland), Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey) and Robin Wright (House of Cards).

Dozens of Canadians who worked on the Montreal-shot X-Men: Days of Future Past are nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

Winners in six film categories and nine TV categories will receive a 16-inch bronze statue of a naked man holding the comedy and tragedy masks.

The SAG Awards typically provide a glimpse at the winners in acting categories at the Academy Awards. Last year, SAG winners Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong’o all went on to win Oscars.

The SAG Awards are broadcast Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on Global.
