Alcohol possible factor in fatal Sask. head-on snowmobile crash

SOUTHEY, Sask. – Alcohol may be a factor in a fatal snowmobile crash that killed two Saskatchewan teens. The crash happened Friday evening approximately three kilometres south of Southey, Sask. on Highway 22.

Police say a man heading east towards Markinch with two other snowmobilers and a teen from Southey riding with another snowmobile collided head-on near the top of an approach in the north ditch. It is unknown how fast they were going.

When police arrived, first responders were giving CPR to both men. Both had suffered serious injuries in the crash.

A 19-year-old man from Markinch and a 15-year-old teen from Southey were declared dead at the scene a short time later. Their names have not been released at the request of family.

Witnesses have told police both teens had consumed alcohol prior to the collision. An autopsy has been ordered and Mounties continue to investigate.
