EDMONTON – Edmotonians rallied at Sir Winston Churchill Square Sunday night, standing in solidarity with the people of France following last week’s terror attacks.

The group carried signs with the words “Je Suis Charlie”.

Those who attended the rally said it’s important to stand up for freedom of expression and show they won’t be silenced by the attacks in Paris.

“It’s not only about France and what happened over there, it’s about the democratic values, the idea of liberty, freedom of expression, and when all that is attacked, everyone is concerned,” explained Anthony Bertrand, French Alliance of Edmonton.

“This is violence just for nothing, and this is also an act of racism. So this is certainly not tolerable in any kind of society,” said Anna Gural-Nigdal, participant.

The event was also meant to reach out to those who lost loved ones.

“This sends a message to the families, that we support them, because this is hard on them.. but also to say that we’re not afraid,” said Marc Seince, organizer.

A few dozen people attended Sunday’s rally.
