Surrey police concerned about outbreak of street robberies

If you’re walking late at night in Surrey, using your phone but not paying attention to your surroundings, police say you’re at risk of being robbed.

Over the past six weeks, over 20 people in Surrey have been robbed on the street at various places around the city. RCMP say it usually happens between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. and in almost all incidents smartphones and cash are the desired target.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

They say it’s usually a group of two to five males in their 20’s carrying out the robberies and they tend to target young people, often showing a weapon to threaten them.

“We’d like to be able to narrow it down…but it’s completely over the entire city. This is really a city-wide warning,” says Sgt. Dale Carr.

“Gratefully, at this point we’ve not had anyone harmed.”

Carr is hoping anyone with information on the robberies contacts them at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers if they want to stay anonymous. In the meantime, they’re asking the public to be on alert late at night.

“[People] shouldn’t be walking and texting and not noticing what their surroundings are. If you see a group a block or two ahead of you, you can make a right turn to avoid them.”
