WATCH: Power outages in North Okanagan & Shuswap

UPDATE WEDS A.M.: Thousands of people in the north Okanagan and Shuswap are without electricity.

B.C. Hydro reports power is out to about 8,000 customers as the result of snow laden trees falling on lines.

Spokesperson, Dag Sharman, says some customers have been without electricity since Monday with the utility working to restore services.

“It’s all hands on deck and they are trying to fix the problems as soon as they can but this could just be the beginning.”

Sharman says further power outages are possible in the region because of this week’s heavy snowfall.

 

UPDATE WEDS A.M.: A power outage has forced the closure of a school in the Shuswap.

Sorrento Elementary lost electricity at 7:45 a.m., with the school district saying power isn’t expected to be restored by B.C. Hydro until 11:00 p.m.

However, power has been restored at North Shuswap Elementary and the school is open Wednesday.

UPDATE WEDS A.M.: According to BC Hydro’s website, there are hundreds of residences in Salmon Arm without power and more than 500 residences in the North Okanagan, particularly west of Northfork Road,  North-South-East of HWY 6.

UPDATE WEDS A.M.: Power has been restored and classes are resuming in North Okanagan Shuswap School District today.

UPDATE: As of  midnight Tuesday, about 2300 BC Hydro customers were still without power in the North Okanagan and Shuswap.

Service in Vernon and Salmon Arm was expected to be restored shortly after midnight.

BC Hydro has informed the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District that some power may not be restored until Wednesday night.

If that’s the case, there there will be no classes at Parkview Elementary or Eagle River Secondary in Sicamous on Wednesday.

The district expects to issue an update on the situation by 6:15 Wednesday morning.

SICAMOUS — Thousands of BC Hydro customers are without power thanks to freezing rain, snow and trees down on power lines.

BC Hydro is working to restore power to about 45-hundred customers as of 8:00 pm Tuesday.

The largest outage runs along the Trans Canada Highway outside Salmon Arm, to Sicamous and through the Malakwa area.

There are also isolated outages along Highway Six in the North Okanagan including Cherryville.

The utility is working to bring customers back on line as soon as possible.
