Bail hearing for Taradale sex assault suspects delayed

CALGARY – Two brothers accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a teenage girl will remain behind bars, for at least a little while longer.

A bail hearing was scheduled Tuesday for Corey and Cody Manyshots, but last minute additional disclosure about the case prompted the defence lawyers to postpone the hearing.

Cody is already under a conditional sentence order until June from an unrelated drug matter in Edmonton. Given the current charges, the Crown may now force him to serve that time in custody, which could add another possible delay to bail.

The brothers are charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm, assault causing bodily harm, and kidnapping.

Police say the 17 year old girl was taken from a northeast bus stop in Taradale and dragged to a nearby alley. She was then taken to a home in Martindale where she was repeatedly assaulted.

The crown prosecution is opposing bail.

“Any victim of a serious crime would be concerned about the alleged offender being released on bail and this has been a very trying and traumatic experience for this young girl,” said prosecutor, Jonathan Hak.

“I know there’s a lot of public concern about the case and it’s received a lot of publicity, but that really is a minor consideration when it comes to determining if (Corey Manyshots) should be released while he waits for trial,” said Mark Takada, who is representing Corey.

The hearing has now been rescheduled for January 16th.
