The snow storm is having a major impact on air travel. Dozens of flights coming in and out of Kelowna have either been delayed or cancelled.
“This is quite a significant impact, “ says Kelowna Airport Director Sam Samaddar. “I would say probably in last 5 years, this is the biggest impact in terms of a prolonged period of a snowstorm.”
Heavy snow over the last 48 hours combined with poor visibility has resulted in most flights being delayed. Every plane also has to be de-iced before taking off which also accounts for much of the delays.
WestJet passengers have been the hardest hit. The airline experienced a shortage of de-icing fluid and was forced to ground many of its flights. As of Monday afternoon, almost three dozen flights had been cancelled, many of them by WestJet. The airline says more de-icing fluid is on the way and extra planes are being brought in on Tuesday to accommodate the stranded passengers.
If you are flying out of Kelowna or picking anyone up, you’re encouraged to check the airport’s website to get flight information before heading out to the airport.
