UPDATE: Crash closes Highway 97 near Summerland

UPDATE 11:45 A.M.

Traffic is flowing again following a serious crash between a car and semi near Summerland.

The crash happened just north of Summerland where a car crossed the median and struck the side of a semi.

The incident closed the highway for a few hours but has since reopened to one lane in each direction.

Police say the driver of the car was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.  The driver of the semi wasn’t injured.

Road conditions were dry at the time.

UPDATE 11:05 A.M. — DriveBC says estimated time of reopening is between noon and 2 p.m.

UPDATE 10:55 A.M. — DriveBC says there is no estimate time of reopening and that there are no detours available.

UPDATE 10:25 A.M. — RCMP say highway may re-open by 11:30 at the earliest.

SUMMERLAND — Traffic on Highway 97 near Summerland is at a standstill as a result of a serious crash.

Witnesses say a small vehicle and semi collided head on near Sumac Ridge Estate winery at around 9 a.m.

No word yet on the conditions of the drivers but Global Okanagan is told that the injuries are serious.

Traffic is blocked in both directions.

No word yet on when traffic will begin to flow again.
