More shelter spaces open up as temperatures continue to drop

Cold shelters across Metro Vancouver are open and taking in people from off the street this morning.

Temperatures dropped well below freezing overnight and extra shelter beds are in place under the emergency cold weather plan.

“Our message to the people who are sleeping outside is that the conditions are quite dire and they really do pose a health and safety risk, so please come in out of the cold,” says Irene Jaakson of the Greater Vancouver Shelter Strategy.

B.C.’s South Coast is facing dropping temperatures as cold Arctic air is surging southwards through the province over the weekend.

Global BC meteorologist Mark Madryga says today’s temperatures range from -16 in the Southern Interior to between -2 and -5 in the Lower Mainland.

“After a sunny day today, temperatures will fall again tonight to similar values as this morning,” says Madryga. “Sub-zero temperatures are in store once again early on New Year’s Day. As a weak weather system slides in on Friday, we may have a few flight flurries in Metro Vancouver, with a chance of mixed rain and snow for the weekend. At this time it is too far in advance to determine if snowfall accumulations are likely.”
