A snowmobiler near Whistler is thankful he headed into the backcountry this afternoon with a friend.
An avalanche happened around 2:30 p.m. today near Brandywine Mountain and Grizzly Lake, 20 kilometres west of Whistler, in the same area where a snowmobiler was killed in 2012.
Whistler RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair says one man was buried in the avalanche, but he was dug out by his friend who was snowmobiling with him.
“We’re quite happy it turned out this way,” he said. “He was nauseous but breathing and regained consciousness.”
When Search and Rescue crews arrived on scene by helicopter, they saw the two giving a thumbs-up.
There are no reports of anyone else caught in the avalanche.
