Whoop Up collisions go viral

“Why is everyone going so fast? We need someone to flag these people to slow down,” remarks Joey Cook as he captures dramatic visuals of spinning cars, desperate onlookers and multiple collisions.

Now the video of Sunday’s Whoop Up Drive collisions has taken off on the web. Published to YouTube on Monday by Cook, the video has amassed over 300,000 views in five days. The video has also been shared by Germany’s largest online weather provider, Wetter Online, and continues to be one of the week’s most popular videos on Huffington Post Alberta’s page.

Though no one was injured in the collisions, the city is taking a look at ways they can improve the Whoop Up Drive situation. The transportation operation department is reviewing their policies and procedures with regards to changing the speed limit when conditions become dangerous. Currently, the department gets input on conditions by driving out themselves, talking to road maintenance crews, or the police.

“If it’s late at night or on the weekends when they’re not always out and operating, and we see that the conditions have got worse or deteriorated to the point where accidents are starting to happen, we have a number to call [transportation] operations,” said Staff Sergeant Art Tamminga with the LRPS.

An automated road weather information system is in the works and should be functional by next year.

“Once that road weather information system is installed it will give us real time data on road surface conditions like how slick is the roads, what is the pavement temperatures and whether or not we should do something about it,” said Transportation Engineering manager, Ahmed Ali.

The city believes having real time information at it’s disposal will help in changing the speed limit more effectively. But, as always, much of the responsibility falls on the drivers.

“Regardless of there being a road sign or not,” said Tamminga, “You should be driving to the conditions.”
