UPDATE -Pedestrians struck in Kelowna intersection

UPDATE – Police say neither the driver of the pickup truck or the teenagers who were struck will be charged.

Police say the two pedestrians, ages 17 and 18, had crossed Bernard Avenue when they turned around and bolted back across the intersection.

The driver, who had the green light, didn’t see them in time to stop.

“The 10 metre skid marks clearly prove to me that the driver tried desperately to stop but he was too close and the wet pavement didn’t help,” says Cst. Steve Holmes of the Kelowna RCMP Municipal Traffic Unit. “The outcome could have been a lot worse if the driver hadn’t tried to brake. He was extremely shaken up by the incident”.

One of the teens suffered serious injuries. The other had relatively minor injuries.

KELOWNA–There were some frightening moments this evening at the intersection of Richter Street and Bernard Avenue this evening.
Emergency crews were called around 5:20 p.m. after two young men were struck by a pick up truck.

Cst. Steve Holmes with Okanagan Traffic Services says witnesses told him the pick up had the right of way when two young men darted out into the intersection.

He says one young man was thrown about ten metres.  Both were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Cst. Holmes is reminding people to be aware of your surroundings when trying to cross the street, and to wear brightly coloured clothing when walking at night, so drivers can see you.
