Dog and cat killer to receive psychiatric assessment

CALGARY- A Calgary man who abused and killed his pet dog and cat will receive a psychiatric assessment before being sentenced for his crimes.

On Thursday, a judge ruled 19-year-old Nicolino Camardi should be sent for a pre-sentence and psychiatric evaluation after after Camardi pleaded guilty to torturing and killing two animals.

The Crown is seeking a federal jail term, meaning a sentence of over two years.

“Often times, I’ve had cases where individuals have been assessed as having anti-social personality disorder or even psychopathy,” said Crown prosecutor Gord Haight. “Obviously that has ramification in terms of risk to the public.”

Camardi has already spent seven months in jail and his lawyer says he’s served enough time and should be released.

“There’s a very real chance that to get the reports they will have to keep him (Camardi) imprisoned in the (Calgary) Remand Centre longer than it ought to be,” said Jack Kelly, Camardi’s defence lawyer.

Camardi starved and abused the dog and cat for several months before they were found dead southeast alleyways in January. He was later arrested in May.

The abuse cases generated widespread outrage among Calgarians and animal rights activists have been watching the Camaradi case closely.

“Time served… no one’s going to be very happy with hearing that he (Camardi) got time served,” said Heather Anderson with the DAISY Foundation . “I think that the whole city will be in uproar.”

A sentencing hearing is now scheduled for the end of February.
