New Windsor Park Fire Station 11 . Global News

A new fire station officially opened in Calgary on Wednesday.

The new Windsor Park Fire Station 11 at 5506 4 Street S.W. started operations in October, replacing the original station built in 1957 no longer suitable for modern firefighting vehicles and equipment.

The original building will be demolished, and community green space will fill the site this spring.

“This new fire station is built not only to house modern firefighting equipment, but also to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold standards,” said Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc.

Some of the LEED features include harvesting rain water from the roof, solar panels to heat water and low-flow water fixtures.

Alberta Health Services paramedics and an ambulance continue working alongside fire crews in the new station.

The province’s Municipal Infrastructure Program and Municipal Sustainability Initiative helped fund the $10-million-building, along with additional funds from tax-supported capital funding.

A large sculpture of a firefighter’s helmet leans against the station as a public art piece.

Called “Under the Helmet” by Canadian artist Ilan Sandler, the piece was commissioned as part of the capital project and mandated by the Public Art Policy.
