CALGARY – The Mustard Seed is hoping a recent decision allowing it to lease underground parking stalls at its affordable housing complex in the downtown core will help generate some much-needed revenue.

The charitable organization opened the 224-unit 1010 Centre earlier this year, but say most of the residents living there don’t have vehicles.

Despite this, the Mustard Seed was required to build a heated, underground parkade as part of their original development permit.

After approaching the City of Calgary, the Mustard Seed was issued a “change of use” permit which allows them to lease the unused stalls.

“We are very grateful and relieved,” said Managing Director of The Mustard Seed Cliff Wiebe.

“I am pleased that we could work together and do the right thing for The City and The Mustard Seed,” added Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

It’s not yet known how many parking stalls will be leased and when they might be available to the public.

The 1010 Centre is expected to be fully occupied by February 2015.
