WATCH: Christmas hampers available in Kelowna

KELOWNA, B.C. – Christmas is coming early for hundreds of Kelowna families. The Salvation Army is taking registrations for its Christmas Hamper program. From food to toys, the hampers include everything to make the holidays brighter. Those on the receiving end, like single mother of three, Kim Peterson are grateful for the helping hand.

“It’s about seeing my two-year-old opening up Christmas presents for the first time,” says Peterson.

She says she has been getting food and toys from the organization’s Christmas Hamper program for a decade.

“I think I’ve always, since I had my first child, appreciated the help and taken the help. There hasn’t been a time where I didn’t need it,” says Peterson.

She is not alone. Staff at the Salvation Army say hundreds of local families have already signed up for the program.

“We had close to 450 families register last year and we are thinking that will be the same number. We’ve already processed 300 families,” says Geri Grainger with the Salvation Army.

The registration for the hampers is being extended to Friday to ensure everyone who needs the help has a chance to sign up.

Hundreds of Okanagan children and their families can look forward to a brighter holiday season thanks to the hard work of an army of volunteers and the generous donations from the community.
