City hosts information sessions on Cycle Track Network

CALGARY – The City of Calgary is hosting a series of information sessions on the soon to be built Cycle Track Network.

Cycle tracks are on-street bike lanes separated by physical barriers, such as the 7th Street S.W. cycle track which opened in July 2013.

The Cycle Track Network pilot project will create 5.5 kilometres of cycling lanes and 700 metres of shared space on Stephen Avenue in downtown Calgary.

Starting on Wednesday, the public has the opportunity to check out plans for the network at a number of information sessions around the city:

  • Nov. 12, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., The Core/TD Square, outside Holt Renfrew, 2nd Floor, 324 8 Avenue S.W.
  • Nov. 12, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Hotel Arts, 119 12 Avenue S.W.
  • Nov. 13, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m., Connaught School, 1121 12 Avenue S.W.
  • Nov. 18, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Western Canada Place, main level, 801 6 Street S.W.
  • Nov. 19, 4 p.m. – 8 p.m., University of Calgary (downtown campus), Lobby, main level, 906 8 Avenue S.W.
  • Nov. 20, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m., The Kahanoff Centre, Jim Hume Room (#201), 105 12 Avenue S.E.

“We recognize that there are some who feel very enthusiastic about the cycle tracks – and some not so much,” says Communications Advisor Jody Crowe. “But sharing the plans and timeline as we move forward will encourage those who are excited to use it and those who are unsure, an opportunity to visualize the final product.”

The first phase of construction on the Cycle Track Network began this fall with modifications to traffic signals and pavement markings.

Final construction will begin in the spring of 2015, with the new cycle tracks scheduled to open in July of 2015.
