Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park rocked by 100-metre wide landslide

WATCH: People living nearby were startled Saturday when they felt the land suddenly give way. Jeremy Hunka reports.

Engineers are hoping to get a better look at the damage today after a landslide in Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park cut a 100-metre wide swath through Mt. Cheam just east of Chilliwack on Saturday, but it doesn’t appear to have caused any damage to structures or property.

Chris Wilson, Emergency Services Manager for the Fraser Valley Regional District, says it happened around 2 p.m., causing a loud rumble that could be heard by the 50 or so people living near the park.

“It is a good thing that there was no initial damage, but we’re going to continue to assess the situation,” he said.

Wilson says that everyone in the area has been notified by emergency services, but an evacuation alert isn’t in place.

“We are not asking them to evacuate at this time, but we are making them aware that we continue to assess it,” he says.

The regional district says that the landslide happened in a remote, high-altitude area of park, so they aren’t quite sure the full extent of the damage. Tomorrow a helicopter will be flying over with engineers to get a better sense of the situation.

The park itself has been closed for the winter – and officers are reminding people that potential hazards like this are a reason why.
