Conservation groups vow to protect Angell Woods

Watch: Angell Woods controversy continues

MONTREAL — Conservation groups made their case at Montreal city hall to guarantee Angell Woods will forever be protected as a green space.

The 105 hectares of land in Beaconsfield, the equivalent of almost 200 football fields, is zoned as green space.

But two American-based companies own almost half the land and want to cash in on their property.

Seda Holdings and Yale Properties want the market value for the land from the city of Montreal.

They plan to make their case before Montreal’s land use and development commission next week.

But conservationists want guarantees the land will remain protected from developers and continue to provide a lush walking area made up of paths through woods and grass.

“There is something about Angell Woods which has captured people’s interest and got people’s passions raised, it’s one thing we don’t compromise,” Stephen Lloyd of the Association for the Protection of Angell Woods, said at city hall.

The city commission is expected to make recommendations to Montreal city council on the final status of the large forest next month.
