REGINA – Two people have been sentenced to life in prison for a double murder the judge called “graphic and disturbing”.
The murders happened in October 2012 on the Standing Buffalo First Nation.
Court heard Jessica Redman and Sheldon Yuzicappi were brutally stabbed and beaten at Redman’s home. In her sentencing remarks, the Queen’s Bench Justice Catherine Dawson said both victims were innocent and defenseless.
Brittany Bear, 23, pled guilty to two counts of first degree murder while Kody Bear, 24, pled guilty to two counts of second degree.
Outside of court, the crown prosecutor said the murders have had a huge impact on the Standing Buffalo community.
“Jessica Redman and Sheldon Yuzicappi were well loved and respected in the community. Two years later their grief is still quite acute,” said Senior Crown Prosecutor Kelly Kaip. “Our review of the facts and the evidence in this particular circumstance were that the crime was very brutal and that the victims were particularly vulnerable.”
Brittany Bear is eligible for parole in 25 years while Kody Bear is eligible in 18.
A third person, 17-years-old at the time, has also pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in November.
