Streaming service shomi ready to launch

TORONTO — Shaw and Rogers announced Monday their joint-venture subscription streaming service shomi will launch Tuesday.

shomi will be available for use on select tablets and mobile devices, online, and on set-top boxes to Shaw and Rogers cable and Internet customers.

It will soon come to Xbox 360 and Chromecast.

The service promises 12,000 hours of content in its first year, including 1,200 movies and 340 TV series like The Blacklist, Sleepy Hollow, Vikings, Sons of Anarchy, and American Horror Story.

shomi will also feature the Canadian premiere of several British series, including A Young Doctor’s Notebook & Other Stories, as well as the debut of the B.C.-shot series iZombie.

“For the past few weeks, we’ve had a rolling thunder of content announcements that position shomi as the ultimate streaming destination with the must-have hit titles you can’t get on any other video streaming service in Canada,” said Marc Dinsdale, general manager of shomi, in a release.

The shomi interface is easy to use and boasts features like curated collections by real people, the ability to create up to six user profiles, as well as movie trailers and Rotten Tomatoes ratings.

Shaw Communications announced Monday all its Internet and cable customers will be able to enjoy a one-month free beta trial of shomi. Internet customers will receive an additional two months of shomi via the website and app.

Shaw Internet and cable customers will also be able to use shomi through more than 45,000 Shaw Go WiFi locations in Western Canada.

The suggested monthly fee for shomi is $8.99.
