Police have arrested one person and are investigating several others after a chemical lab was discovered inside a Coventry Hills home on Monday.
Officers came across the lab after responding to a 911 call at the northwest Calgary home.
“Once they got in to the residence that’s when they discovered, inadvertently, that this chemical lab operation was in there,” said Sgt. Doug Crippen of the Calgary Police Service.
After securing a warrant police returned to the home on Tuesday.
They blocked off an alley and secured the residence as a crime scene.
It’s believed synthetic drugs were being produced inside.
The discovery comes as a surprise to neighbours.
“It’s been a very quiet neighborhood,” said Alan May.
“We’ve never had an problems or issues here before – it’s quite a shock,” he added.
Police say there were no obvious signs of criminal activity taking place in the house.
“In this particular case we had no information from any of the neighbors,” said Crippen.
Police have identified some of the individuals connected to the home, and are questioning them.
Several agencies are involved in the investigation.
They include the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), the RCMP Clandestine Lab Enforcement and Response (CLEAR) team, The Calgary Fire Department Hazardous Materials team and Emergency Medical Services.
Investigators expect a search and decontamination of the home will last several days.
They’ve issued assurances the home poses no immediate public safety risk.
