LAKE COUNTRY – Safety or noise complaints? Which should take precedent? In one case involving rumble strips in Lake Country, it’s the latter.
The Ministry of Transportation has been paving over rumble strips along parts of the stretch of Highway 97 in Lake Country.
The rumble strips alert you when you’ve moved out of the lane you’re travelling in and on to the shoulder of the road.
“The rumble strips themselves are part of the overall safety features that we built into the highway,” says Murray Tekano with the Ministry of Transportation.
But noise complaints from neighbours seemingly trump that safety plan. Tekano wouldn’t say how many noise complaints the ministry received, but it was enough for the rumble strips to be paved over.
“These strips will generate noise and in some situations more noise than perhaps is desirable so this is why we are doing it,” says Tekano.
He says the paving of the remaining rumble strips will be complete by the end of the month.
