SPALLUMCHEEN – High nitrate levels in their drinking water have some Spallumcheen residents concerned.
Those who use the Steele Springs water system say a water quality advisory, which has been in place for months, has had a big impact.
“We have quite a few elderly people. They have to get someone to bring this bottled water to their house or have a reverse osmosis system installed in their house,” says Brian Upper, chair of the Steele Springs Waterworks District.
“Some of them are trying to sell their homes so they can downsize and move into town and they can’t sell their homes. So that is a stressful situation for elderly people.”
In March, Interior Health sent a letter to water users in the Steele Springs Waterworks District warning of high levels of nitrate in their water.
They say pregnant women, young babies and the elderly, along with those with weakened immune systems or some chronic disease, should take precautions and use alternative sources of water.
A water quality advisory remains in place for the district.
