EDMONTON – The RCMP says human remains were found inside a home destroyed by fire near Boyle, Alberta on Wednesday.

At 10 a.m. emergency crews from Boyle, Athabasca and Colinton were called to the blaze on a rural property northwest of Boyle.

Police were first on scene, and by the time they arrived, the home was already engulfed in flames and couldn’t be saved.

There were also a number of propane tanks on the property.

Since it was a rural location, Cpl. Spaans said the volunteer fire crews brought tankers full of water, but local water trucks also shuttled in water to help.

It took several hours to extinguish the fire.

When they searched through the debris, officials found human remains.

Cpl. Spaans believes the remains are of one deceased individual, but the RCMP will be running identification tests to make sure.

The RCMP is treating the fire as suspicious at this time.

While there is no evidence of foul play, they are waiting for evidence to rule anything out.

The residence — on Range Road 203 and Township Road 660 — was destroyed. There is no damage estimate at this time.

The RCMP continues to investigate this fire along with a Provincial Fire Investigator.

RCMP members, including forensics investigators, will remain on scene Thursday in an effort to determine what caused the fire.

Investigators will be working with the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the remains.
