HALIFAX – Police say a man is facing charges after allegedly breaching a publication ban in the sexual assault case of Halifax attorney Lyle Howe.
Howe, a black lawyer with a high public profile in the city, was found guilty by a jury of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman and sentenced in July to three years in jail.
Following his conviction, police say they received complaints about someone posting the victim’s name on a Facebook page.
The identity of the victim was under a court-ordered publication ban after the charges against Howe were first laid.
After investigating, police charged a 62-year-old Dartmouth man on Wednesday with breaching the ban.
He is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court on Nov. 4.
Howe’s licence to practise law was suspended by the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society.
He is appealing his conviction.
Meanwhile, Halifax police are investigating another possible breach of publication ban for a different case in which the victim’s identity is protected by a court order.
