B.C. students are back to school

WATCH: Nearly half a million public school students are back in class three weeks late but as Jas Johal reports, kids and teachers are glad to be back even though not everyone was happy with the deal to end the strike.

B.C.’s public school students are waking up from an extended summer break this morning with classes finally set to resume across the province.

The strike forced students to miss the first three weeks of the year and teachers and parents spent the weekend scrambling to get ready.

In most districts, Monday will be a shortened day with students taking part in assemblies and teachers taking attendance.

“We are thrilled to be back in the building,” said Morgan Kyle, the principal of Seaquam Secondary School in Delta. “It would be too much for kids and too much for staff to have a full day. It is going to be a nice integration, but tomorrow everybody is going to hit the pavement running.”

BCTF president Jim Iker spoke with Global BC‘s Steve Darling this morning, saying there is still a lot of work to do to ensure the negotiated deal tackles class size and composition, the two issues that were pivotal in the teachers’ dispute.

“I think overall members are pleased that they are back in schools today doing what they love doing,” says Iker. “We know it was not the deal that we all wanted. But I think it is a start.”

Police forces are also getting ready for the start of classes with officers warning drivers to slow down in school zones.

Vancouver police will be out in full force to welcome kids back to school at Queen Elizabeth Elementary in Vancouver this morning.
