KELOWNA — Charlene Wieb and Lyall Grexton of Kelowna are feeling a little better about the future of their dogs.
It was Tuesday when three of their Rottweilers were clinging to life after being attacked with a machete or axe while the animals slept in their back yard.
The injuries might have spelled the end for all the dogs and did for one of them — Lola — who turned one on the night of the attack — didn’t make it.
But the other two dogs, Sheena and Rocky, have managed to pull through.
Even the vet who performed the surgery admits he’s surprised by the dog’s speedy recovery especially Sheena — the 10-year-old – who was admitted with her skull sliced open.
“When she came here, she had a sliced off skull and a big cut on the nose. So, I had to perform a major reconstructive surgery,” says Dr. Jatinder Mundi of Burtch Animal Hospital.
Rocky, the youngest at eight months old, looked as though he was going to lose his left ear, but he too has been patched back together and may regain all of his hearing. Wieb says it’s nothing short of a small miracle.
“They’re fighters. They want to live,” says Wiebe.
And people want to help. The phones at the vet clinic have been ringing off the hook.

“Random people from all over B.C. have been calling and from Alberta. One guy today donated $500,” says Kelsey Hall of Burtch Animal Hospital.
It’s just a matter of time before the dogs can go home but the investigation is just getting underway.
Police are looking at whether a friend of Grexton’s is connected.
That man has just been released from custody, facing potential charges after Grexton was assaulted last week.
The situation is weighing heavily on Grexton’s mind now the man is back on the street.
“I can’t sleep and I can’t eat. It’s not over. It’s not over.”
