WINNIPEG – RCMP say someone poisoned bee hives in western Manitoba, killing thousands of the honey-producing insects and inflicting a major financial loss on their owners.

The bizarre crime affected hundreds of honey-producing hives at two locations, 10 and 16 kilometres northwest of Brandon in the rural municipality of Elton, RCMP said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Officers estimate the hives were tampered with between Aug. 14 and Sept. 3.

It wasn’t immediately clear in the information provided by RCMP late Wednesday night how the hives were poisoned.

There have been no arrests in the case and RCMP appealed for anyone with information to contact their Brandon detachment at 204-726-7522.
