TORONTO – Just when you thought too many people had their faces buried in their smartphone or tablet, a Toronto-based company has come up with a headset that literally allows users to mount an iPad on their face.

Toronto design firm Metatecture has created a headset that transforms an iPad Mini or iPhone 6 Plus into a virtual reality headset.

The device slides into the headset, which has two lenses that display imagery to the user’s eyes. The idea is to utilize the device’s powerful Retina display to provide an inexpensive virtual reality experience. There is even a built-in battery for on-the-go use.

“By using the front-facing camera in conjunction with printable AR [Augmented Reality] markers, we can move freely in a virtual environment using accurate head tracking without the need for an external camera or additional hardware,” reads the product description.

“This gives AirVR high quality positional tracking capable of accurately locating a user’s position and orientation within a space, while remaining mobile and low cost.”

AirVR only costs CDN$49 – but you must already own a compatible device, of course.

Metatecture has already come up with a few initial apps for the product, including a photo app that displays user’s photos in “virtual space” and a panoramic app that uses the panoramic photos stored on the device to allow users to revisit any place.

The company adds that because the headset leaves all of the iPad ports open there is the possibility to attach other accessories like game controllers – which may provide another use for the device.

Metatecture is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to get the invention off the ground.

So far the AirVR has raised over $6,000 of its $20,000 goal.
