First responders test emergency response times at the Calgary International Airport

CALGARY – Several agencies came together Friday night at YYC for a mock emergency simulating a plane crash.

Alberta Health Services, the Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Police, and 75 volunteers all participated.

It was a chaotic scene, with a plane on fire and a number of volunteers pretending to be injured.

Fire officials says scenarios like this one give first responders much needed opportunities to work together and improve their skills.

“We train all the time of course in isolation, but to have a real simulated event that is realistic as possible gives all the agencies the chance to work together,” says the Calgary Fire Department’s Deputy Chief, Steve Dongworth.

The Calgary Fire Department says it has had a major fire at the airport and a number of smaller incidents, but never a crash.
