HALIFAX – A man and a boy appeared in court Monday on charges of first-degree murder after a stabbing last month in Dartmouth.
Twenty-three-year-old Trevor Hannan and a 15-year-old boy who cannot be named are accused of killing 28-year-old Daniel Michael Pellerin.
Pellerin, a father of two, was stabbed in a parking lot of Ferral Hall on Windmill Road the night of Aug. 30.
Witnesses say they saw three men fighting before an altercation took place.
Pellerin was found unconscious and rushed to hospital where he later died.
Both of the accused were arrested Friday.
On Monday, Hannan was remanded until his next court appearance on Oct. 16.
The boy, who appeared in Halifax youth court, had his case set over until Sept. 26. He is also facing charges for weapons-related offences.
Halifax Regional Police spokesperson Const. Pierre Bourdages said the boy was found with a loaded handgun.
Bourdages said police believe the stabbing was not a random act and they aren’t looking for any more suspects.
Police have not revealed how the two suspects and Pellerin knew each other.
“First-degree murder involves premeditation,” Bourdages said. “In this case, we do believe that it was a planned event.”
Hannan has a prior criminal record. In 2011, he was sentenced to 29 months in jail after shooting his younger brother in the stomach at their Albro Lake apartment building.
It was an emotional day at court for Pellerin’s family, who did not speak to the media, but said they were thankful to the police.
A memorial at the scene were Pellerin was stabbed continued to grow Monday as people left flowers and messages of condolences.
