EDMONTON – “Your life lacks meaning.” That is how an ad for an Alberta cabin posted on Kijiji begins.

The ad, posted on July 31, is getting a lot of love on social media.

So, what’s up for sale? According to the ad, it’s “80 sweet acres . . . with a sweet log cabin, a five-minute walk from a flippin’ lake.” Basically, according to the owner’s description, it’s “THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD.”

“You can hunt there,” the ad continues. “You can go on nature hikes. You can write the great Canadian novel. You can’t plug anything in or have a shower but you can drive a stupid quad all over the goddamn place like a boss and everyone just thinks it’s normal behaviour.”

The property – located northwest of Smoky Lake – is listed for $125,000.

Todd Babiak, who co-owns the cabin with his brother, looked into using a real estate agent, but after some frustrations, decided to try to sell the property on Kijiji instead.

Within a day-and-a-half, the ad had about 5,000 views, and the brothers have already received about 50 inquiries from potential buyers.

“Some people just respond saying it’s really funny, but most are responding saying ‘I’m interested.’”

Babiak said he’s used Kijiji before, but it’s never prompted a response like this.

“I’ve put things on Kijiji before… I wasn’t whimsical, and I got one or two responses.”

This time, it’s a different story.

“It’s been overwhelming for sure, but it’s been fun.”

“People from all over Canada and the U.S. are sending emails,” said Babiak. “It starts to travel.”

So, why did he decide to take such a candid approach?

“In a world where there is so much advertisements… it’s hard to get noticed.”

Plus, Babiak said the style of the ad tends to appeal to a certain audience.

“The kinds of people that respond to an ad like that are pretty neat people.”

Babiak and his brother are hosting an open house at the property on Saturday, August 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“The Best Place in the World” can be found at 61131 Range Road 174, near Smoky Lake, Alberta.

Smoky Lake is about 120 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
