CALGARY- A popular ice cream store in the East Village which regularly sees lineups out the door has its sights set on a new location.

Village Ice Cream has been a hit ever since opening its doors at the end of a dead-end street in Victoria Park two years ago. Famous for its freshly made waffle cones and unique ice cream flavours churned on site, the store’s owner now plans to open another location.

“I want to expand within the community,” explains owner Billy Friley. “The idea is that we’re starting to  grow, we’re getting lineups and as we grow lineups grow bigger and people might not want to wait.”

The new store will be opening in Britannia Plaza, just off Elbow Drive and 50 Ave. S.W. The plaza is currently home to a grocery store, Starbucks, boutiques and a bistro.

“It’s a hilarious, awesome little spot,” Friley says, of the new store. “There’s a great neighbourhood around it, it’s got the ridge and Sandy Beach, and you can grab an ice cream and go walk your dog or just sit in the park.”

He adds that they hope to add vibrancy to Britannia.

“It’s got room to park, room to walk, it’s a quaint little area. We’re just so excited…hopefully we’ll help make [Britannia Plaza] seem like a fun destination.

“Ice cream shops in neighbourhoods are a great thing, they’re great for congregating.”

The city permit process is now finished, so the new Village Ice Cream location should be open by the end of August or beginning of September.
