WHITBY, Ont. – A 58-year-old Whitby man has been charged with criminal negligence after police allege his wife was neglected for months.
Police say a 62-year-old woman was brought to a local hospital on June 3, and hospital staff alerted police after seeing her deteriorated condition.
The woman was found to have lost up to 40 per cent of her body weight and could not walk or speak properly after suffering a stroke.
While the victim was in hospital, police say investigators also learned of an assault alleged to have occurred in February, which led the woman to receive medical treatment.
Police say the woman had been living at home with her husband while her health deteriorated.
The man – whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the victim – is charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm, failing to provide the necessaries of life and assault causing bodily harm.
The man was held for a bail hearing.
